I have a soft spot for this restaurant.. I sometimes go in for lunch on the spur of the moment and order No. 43:
PAAD PHRIK THAI SOD (PORK, CHICKEN OR BEEF)
(Braised Beef or Chicken or Pork with Green Peppercorn, Curry Paste and Basil Leaves)
$17.00 and max heat.
The only Thai green peppercorn dish in Canberra, that I can find.
Busy restaurant but the staff can always find a free table. I try to sit near the front window and admire the decorations which are changed regularly. Faultless service despite the number of patrons.
Thai iced coffee is a nice surprise.
Edit: I went in on the spur of the moment the next day (kind of thought I would) and ordered the other maximum heat dish, the jungle curry. I found the level of spiciness to my taste, and if I'd wanted it hotter I could have chewed the sliced chillies in the curry. However the flavour wasn't real fresh-tasting. I'll put that down to me ordering at 2.30pm, but next time I'll go back to ordering the Paad Phrik Thai Sod.
Service perfect as usual, despite the waiter forgot to give me cutlery.
Average food. I've had the pad thai chicken and prawns a few times as it's close to work but it's pretty average and a bit pricey. Best dish I've had here is the mussaman chicken curry - moist tender chicken with really tasty curry sauce. Slightly salty and oily but I always able to finish most of it. Wait staff are friendly and I like how they change the decorative vases and flowers on the tables every few days. Average Thai food, I've had better.
Thai Spice in Woden serves amazing curry puffs and decent Thai food. I come here quite regularly being so close to work. The pad thai chicken and prawns is my usual order. My work colleagues tell me it has changed ownership over the years and isn't as good as it used to be. It still hits the spot though. Massaman is a very popular curry with potatoes and peanuts in it. The Massaman beef is what people usually order but I decided to be a bit different and ordered the Massaman chicken curry with saffron coconut rice. This was a BEAUTIFUL dish. The chicken is so tender and soft to bite in to. It falls apart when you poke your fork into it. I think I have been converted to the Massaman chicken. The sauce is delicious - slightly salty, but oh so gooood. My work colleague sums it up nicely 'I wish I could just put this in a cup and drink all of the sauce'. Massaman Chicken Curry The saffron coconut rice was average. I couldn't taste any coconut. It's really just a saffron rice. Oh and here a
